Food & Feed Safety & Quality

Viterra is committed to ensuring that the products it provides meet rigorous food safety and quality standards. Viterra has established a comprehensive Food & Feed Safety and Quality System that supports it in meeting these rigorous standards, as well as the increasing expectations of customers and consumers.

Viterra's Food & Feed Safety and Quality Management System adheres to several leading global standards.

Within our grain business, Viterra is certified to the ISO 22000:2018 standard. This standard applies to organizations in the food production chain which must demonstrate their ability to control food safety hazards and ensure that food is safe for human and animal consumption. All of Viterra's grain handling sites (including grain elevators and port terminals) are certified to this standard.

Additionally, Viterra's Oilseed Processing Group and specialty crops facilities are certified to FSSC 22000, an International Standard developed for the certification of Food Safety Management Systems within the food manufacturing industry. This standard combines the requirements of ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management Systems requirements) and ISO/TS 22002-1 (prerequisite programmes on food safety for food manufacturing), creating a robust system to ensure ongoing food safety. FSSC 22000 is fully recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative, the leading organization for the harmonization of international food safety standards.

Viterra's Food &Feed Safety and Quality System has also attained registration to the GMP+B3 standards (Good Manufacturing Practices) at some of our Canadian grain handling facilities that export feed commodities to the European Union. Meeting GMP+, a standard based in the Netherlands administered by GMP+ International for regulation of foreign suppliers of animal feed materials, is a requirement for supplying feed materials into the European Union.

Recently, specially designated Viterra grain handling facilities which ship canola to bio-fuel markets in Europe have been certified sustainable. These facilities and certain farmers are certified to the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification scheme (ISCC). The ISCC scheme meets the requirements of the European Union in the Renewable Energy Directive for the production and handling of sustainable biomass.
